Confection/Non-oil Sunflower Characteristics
Confection sunflower seeds are normally black with white stripes and approximately five eighths of an inch long.
Confection sunflower produce for consumption its kernels, and not use for oil. Therefore, its mass of 1000 seeds
should exceed 100 g. Bakery and confection grade of sunflower kernel larger and loosely fixed to the kernel inside,
not so tight to the husk, then oilseed sunflower. Seed size is primarily affected by plant genetics, but also to planting
density and weather.
Sunflower seeds are graded according to size and separated into groups. The largest size will go into the in-shell
market and sold as a snack. The medium-sized seeds are usually hulled for the kernel market. The smallest size
of confectionary sunflower (passing through a sieve with a diameter of 7 mm) has about 15 to 20% of the total weight.
The smallest size of sunflower seeds goes into the bird and pet feeding market, either in pure form or in various mixtures.
Confection Kernel Nutrient Composition
The nutritional value of confectionery sunflower kernels allows to classify it as healthful products.
One of the main features of these kernels is high iron content (2 times more than in raisins), a good source of several
key nutrients such as zinc, potassium, thiamine, vitamin E and dietary fiber. Also sunflower seeds contain a reduced
amount of saturated fatty acids, which reduces blood cholesterol. According to this nutrient composition we can describe
all products, which containing confectionery sunflower kernel, as natural and healthy product.
